SP89 is a semi-automatic and civilian version of the famous automatic MP5K. The gun was gaining popularity in sporting circles until it ran into political trouble.

So, SP89 also represents Heckler and Koch's last attempt to sell a civilian version of MP5K, which in turn was a popular variant of MP-5, the most celebrated firearm of its class. To understand SP89 it is inmportant to explore its pedigree first.

It was the ultimate close quarters battle weapon system thanks to its matchless combination of compact size, lethality, light weight, accuracy, and reliablility. MP-5 was reliable and accurate even when firing on full automatic.

These features made MP5 the preferred sub-machine gun of counter-terrorist operatives around the world.

MP5 is air-cooled, magazine-fed, delayed blowback operated, select-fire weapon that can be shouldered or hand fired. The weapon carries a roller-locked bolt system that typical to all H&K family of small arms. MP5 is chambered for various pistol cartridges to include 9x19mm Luger, .40 S&W, and 10mm Auto. The highlight of MP5 is a selector that allows the safe, semi-automatic, three-round burst, and fully automatic modes of fire from a 30-round magazine. Over 120 variants of the HK MP5 submachine gun are available to address the widest range of tactical requirements.

The first MP5s made their way into the US in the early 1970s. MP5s are still imported into the U.S. exclusively by H&K for law enforcement and military sale.

HK modified MP5k into SP89 as a large frame pistol especially suited for sporting use. Its inherent accuracy made it an excellent choice for target practice and small-game hunting. This low recoil pistol used the delayed roller locked bolt system common to many HK firearms.

SP89 was also a versatile weapon that allowed buyers to experiment with different configurations. Though it came with a common trigger, PSG1 trigger group could be added.

Though the gun was imported for a few years it ran into political trouble. In 1993 a Clinton executive order, Assault Weapons Ban, banned imports of SP89. SP89 is now available as 'pre-ban' collector items at premium prices. For a gun that originally sold at about $900, the SP89 now reportedly is sold for prices above $3,000.
