The Savage 10FP is a bolt-action sniper rifle manufactured by the Savage Arms Company USA. Savage Arms is a well-established and renowned small arms manufacturing company and the 10FP is built on the lines of its 'varmint' or hunting rifles. It is considered to be a highly accurate and effective tactical sniper weapon designed mostly for use by Law Enforcement Agencies. Seven main variants of this rifle exist and each is designated an LE code to signify it as part of the Law Enforcement Series.
The 10FP is a short action, rotating bolt rifle with dual bolt lugs. The magazine is non detachable and is integral to the rifle and is chambered for .308 Win ammunition but some variants use the .223 Rem. The integral magazine holds 4 rounds of ammunition. The rifle is highly accurate with most experts agreeing that it can shoot sub MOA using 168-grain match ammunition. The accuracy is best though with .308 caliber ammunition because of better ballistics.
The main features of this rifle are the Savage trademark Accutrigger that is adjustable to suit individual preferences, an adjustable butt plate, adjustable cheek pad, built-in monopod and an adjustable rail for mounting a bipod. All 10FP rifles come with a traditionally shaped polymer buttstock, which have a built-in third swivel stud on which to mount the bipod. Some models of the 10FP feature the Choate 'Ultimate sniper' stocks made of plastic having a skeleton butt with pistol grip and wide handguard. The adjustable cheek pad, built-in monopod and adjustable butt plate come only with this stock. The other model carries the McMillan fiberglass stock. A unique feature of the 10FP is that the receiver and bolt are specifically manufactured for each other and cannot be interchanged with other 10FP rifles even if they were to be of the same model.
The Savage 10FP has a button-rifled, free floating, heavy barrel to enhance tolerances and improve accuracy. Thick and heavy barrels are better at resisting temperature be it overheating or cold weather. Also because the barrel is stiffer it is less likely to go off mark due to external factors. The free floating feature of the barrel means that it vibrates less and this combined with the weight makes for consistent precision. Another sniping characteristic of the Savage 10FP is the recessed crown muzzle that helps to protect it from damaging nicks. Since every action must have an equal and opposite reaction, the release of gas behind the bullet needs to be uniform and consistent so that the shot is not deflected in any direction by the force of the gas as it exits the muzzle. A damaged crown will lead to inaccuracy since it causes the gas to be released non-uniformly.
The rifles come drilled and tapped for scope mounts and some models come with Leupold 3.5 - 10 x 40 mm scope with Mil Dot recticle.
