The Colt Python Revolver is a popular.357 Magnum caliber revolver. The Pythons are reputed for their better-quality fit and finish; accuracy; smooth trigger pull and a tight cylinder lock-up. The one noted drawback of the Colt Python Revolver is its lack of precision or tendency to go 'out of time' in case of continuous heavy shooting. In such scenarios, the cylinder fails to turn into precise alignment with the forcing cone. As such the user could be sprayed with small pieces of shaved projectile when he/she fires the gun. If you realize this shortcoming, it's time that the guns lock work is re-timed.

The Colt Python Revolver was introduced in 1955. It was initially intended to be a large-frame .38 Special target revolver. This is the reason why the Colt Python Revolver features precision adjustable sights; a smooth trigger; solid construction and extra metal.

A Colt Python Revolver has a unique look. This is because it has a full barrel under-lug, ventilated rib and adjustable sights. In the beginning, Colt Python Revolvers had hollow under-lugs. This idea was almost immediately reworked on and it was decided to leave them solid to increase much needed barrel weight.

The Colt Python Revolver was initially made available in two finishes. The: Royal Blue and Bright Nickel. The latter was discontinued when the sturdy satin stainless and mirror-polished Ultimate Stainless steel models were launched. The stainless steel and Royal Blue finishes are still available in the Python "Elite" model.

Colt Python Revolvers are available with 2.5 inch, 4 inch, 6 inch, and 8 inch barrels. The 6-inch model is immensely popular and the 8-inch variety is favorable for hunting. The 3-inch barrel version, which has been discontinued, is a highly valuable collector's item. Presently, it is made by Colt's Custom Shop as the Python Elite model with a 4 or 6-inch barrel. Its market price starts at $1000 USD. Of late, Colt has put an end to production of double action revolvers, including the Python because of sales dips and increasing production costs.

The Colt Python Revolver was very popular within the law enforcement market when it was introduced. This is not true any longer as most service revolvers used at present are semi-automatic pistols that are much needed to keep pace with law and order requirements of toady. Whether you are contemplating to purchase a new or used Colt Python Revolver, keep in mind that even though a model may not be in use, they are still very popular and have exorbitant price tags attached to them.
