All the P Series pistols including the Ruger KP93 are double action, short recoil operated designs, for military, police, and civilian self defense and recreational use by the company. They are considered to be reliable and strong firearms able to bear the rugged style of use. Yet there is one disadvantage that is considered by many as the biggest one, the weight of these Ruger pistols. They are bulky and sometime uneasy to be carried as a concealed weapon. The first P Series pistol from the Ruger was the P-85, developed in 1985, that reached the market in the year 1987. Another important tip that we would like to state here is the designation convention followed for the Ruger P sequence pistols.
The letter 'K' in prefix of the firearm model rests for the stainless steel slide thus if you turn out to read the expression Ruger KP93, it would be the identical Ruger P93 but with a stainless steel slide thus the name Ruger KP93. Also an additional point to be prominent in the identification convention is the suffix used with the names. In addition to a manual safety, there are Decock-Only (D) and Double-Action-Only (DAO) models available, which carry the designation as the suffix. Therefore the 9 mm polymer frame with stainless steel slide which can only decock for safety would be named as KP95D. There can be two other suffix used as in case KP95DPR15 where D is for de-cock only, PR is used for Pica tinny rail and 15 is magazine capability.
The P93 was a compact 9 mm model, with a shortened 4" barrel and a streamlined slide. The P-95 can be said to be a revolutionary design by Ruger. The P95 used the Ruger KP93 slide and barrel, but changed from the 1911 style rotating link design to a link less design to transfer energy to the frame less abruptly, reducing the stress on the frame and in the process decreasing the felt recoil. The catalog ID for the earlier existing model were Ruger KP93D and Ruger KP93 DAO. The safety slide for the Ruger KP93D was de-cocker in stainless steel slide and the frame was aluminum alloy frame that was dark gray on blued models and light gray on stainless, except two tone models which use light gray with blued slides. The same was valid for Ruger KP93 DAO. Both the pistols Ruger KP93D and Ruger KP93 DAO were built in 9 mm with magazine capacity of 15 rounds with the weight of 31 oz and 33 oz respectively.
