John M. Browning is the man who takes the credit for the creation of Colt Model 1900. It was the first automatic American Pistol which was self loading in nature. Although it was a self-loading semi-automatic .38 caliber handgun which was introduced by Colt, it made a new impression on the century. This led to the introduction of .38 ACP which had a rounded chamber.
Jon M Browning developed this model of Colt 1900 Handgun on the similar lines of his earlier creations which he did in 1980. It had to be tested in comparison of some other major pistils for its qualities, and if it passed it would be used up in the US military. Later on, Colt 1900 model handgun surpassed the test and was included into the US military. Afterwards it was remodeled with better design and efficiencies and the design developed as M1911.
This design of Colt Model 1900 by John M Browning was copied by many fire arms industries later in history. Actually this was the first of its kind to use a slide while operating. This became quite popular with the industry and was liked by the people who used it. This led to the invention of many other pistols and handguns on similar lines. The design of this pistol type that uses a recoiling slide became one of the most widely copied design features in firearms history. Even the same design and pattern of Colt Model 1900 was copied in the beginning of the 21st century. The ubiquity of slides in self-loading pistols finally began its trek to popularity with this little known design by John Browning.
The one thing that is unique to the automatic pistols and handguns is that apart from firing after getting reloaded, they are the only weapons developed for the use of smokeless powder, and all the transitions are only for task step up.
John M Browning got his Colt Model 1900 automatic pistol patented in April 1897. Quite a lot of designs in full automatic, with no safeties, were tested after the launch of Colt Model 1900 Handgun, but failed and were nearly without a solution. All of them had a technical problem which made them uncontrollable. On the other hand, those experiments resulted in the development of the Model 1900 .38 Automatic Pistol.
The Army had ordered around 200 of the Colt Model 1900 pistols for testing in the beginning, the Navy had made a request for 50 such model hand guns, and Colt supplied the civil market with more than 3,250 pistols.
Many more experiments were done which were successful on the lines of Colt Model 1900 and as a result many more .38, .32, and .380 automatics were created for civilian sale before the first military model was finally created in 1905. Although everything from the cartridge and the pistol was new to the army but they were all really excited about this new model. Experiments and tests followed for several years and resulted in the famous Government Model .45 1911 Automatic adopted by the military that year.
