I am guilty of not turning on the computer after work.

I've been working 55 to 60 hours a week at the office and another 8 to 16 hrs a week as an Instructor and Range Safety Officer. I'm not complaining, actually quite grateful for the extra in the pay checks.

In the engineering industry, I could be cut to 32 hours at a drop of a hat. And I am seeing writing on the wall I don't like. Other firms are laying off engineers.

I don't blame you for not turning the computer on. Seems to be nothing but more bad news every time my home page opens. I've been working similar hours lately myself, but I have to access my work from the computer.

What type of engineer are you? I went to school for electrical engineering, but lost interest, and went to work in the telecom industry.

It's fest or famine my friend, and we have to do what it takes.
I am a mechanical engineer. Commercial HVAC, medical gas piping, domestic plumbing and fire protection design. Received my engineering degree in 1981.

Did you return to school to get your degree? I've been considering going back to finish my degree. I lack 40 credits. The good thing is I'd have a job with the company I currently work for.

Colonel Brad,

Right out of High School, I got a Union Job with Caterpillar as a heavy equipment operator and track shop welder. I was a blue collar 49er. Good job and paid very well, I worked very hard for my check.

However, I had a hard time dealing with individuals that couldn't speak a full sentence without using profanity. And the fact that they smoked cigarettes and leaning against a broom all day only to received the same pay.

So I went to college, got my engineering degree and never looked back.

1st Lt Vachss,

For me to assist, and I want to help. I will need to know more about the type of system you have.

Whole house split system with direct expansion and outside condensing unit?

Ground water source heat pump system?

Through the wall self-contained A/C unit?

Typically, noise is from moving parts and indicates, that we have a bearing going out. Or, it could be a compressor that's bad.

Is your system cycling more frequently that usual and is it currently cooling properly?

Chain I'm wondering if I should even get it fixed this year.
Winter is coming and i'm using it less and less.
When it kicks on it I hear "belt whining/whistling" I can hear it through the registers...runs, works fine and then infrequently it "screams" for about 3 seconds..it sounds like a bad belt on a car..and it scares the poop out of me when it does it..I run the swamp at night because that "scream" pops me right up at 2-5AM and then I am wide awake..

But it happens the same every time..all summer long..long..

1st Lt Vachss,
Your inclination is probably correct. Your blower motor has a drive belt. Depending on the number of hours of operation annually, they require replacement every 18 to 24 months. Something else to check. Most fan motors have a bronze sleeve or ball bearings. Sleeve bearings will last many years but a ball bearing motor can last even longer. Most motors with sleeve bearings will have a set of removable plugs where you can oil the motor. I recommend a few drops of SAE 20W oil NON DETERGENT every year. Blower motor oil ports are typically placed between 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock on the shaft. There is a device available that will extend the oil ports so you can reach the rear port on direct drive blowers. NEVER use WD 40 to lubricate a motor since it has little or no lubricating properties for bearings and will wash out the heavier oil. I recommend to give it attention now. Don't wait. When is a good time to repair something? Today and never tomorrow my friend. Good luck.
