I JUST STARTED KARATE , I HAVE NOT TRAINED LIKE THIS IN A LONG TIME . I JOG , PUSH UPS , SIT UPS , YOU KNOW NORMAL STUFF . ITS BEEN A WHILE SINCE I TRAINED IN MARTIAL ARTS . BUT I WOULD RECOMEND YOU GUYS GET OFF THE SOFA AND CHECK IT OUT . IM USEING ALOT OF NEW MUSCLES ON MY ATEMP TO REGAIN THE ABILTY I USED TO PERFORM AT . YOU MIGHT HAVE TO HIT SOME ONE BEFORE YOU CAN GET TO YOUR GUN .

I quit working out alittle over two years. I'm still pretty active though, with work and paint balling. You're right though, it's not the same. Last year when I got jumped by two twenty year olds in front of my house, it took all I had to handle them. I'm light and fast, but I always rely on the nasty three (nose, throat, nuts) to disable my attackers. That day I couldn't stop either one of them. We fought all the way from the street through my front yard and onto my front porch. When I made it into the house one was in the door way, I made it to my .45 before he made it into my house. I thought I was just getting old, both were twenty years my junior and all. But because I did make it to my gun, I never thought about re-newing my fighting abilities 'til now. The older we get, the more we need these abilities. Thanks...

The General has a valid point. My neighbors know that I'm always there for them. I guess it is different living in the city.

The closest house to mine is about a quarter mile away. Weeks can go by and the only time we see each other is at church.

Up here in the north, when temperatures drop below -20 degrees, for weeks at a time and roads are closed due to 24 inches of snow, folks have to rely on each other. Not jump each other.

Fred, I've always wanted to try some form of martial arts training, but I wrestled in high school and found that was always enough technique to dismantle anyone who was willing to give physical a go. Those were my younger/wilder years though, but I've got some 20 year old nephews who always want to give Uncle Brad a run for his money when I see them. It never ends up working out to well for them though. Never had a lot of problems handling people looking for a physical altercation, and I've encountered a whole slew of them. I must be an a-hole magnet.
I made the decision to start carrying a few years back when I was at a shopping center around Christmas time. I was strapping my daughter in her car seat when some lowly looking guy approached demanding that I "answer" a question for him. His insistance in the situation earned him a nice introduction with the asphalt of the parking lot, courtesy of a well placed left jab/right hook combo. The situation worked out for me and my daughter that time, but it made me think. What if there had been two of them, and it required more effort? Who would be watching my daughter while I dealt with the attackers? It would have been easy for someone to grab my daughter out of the car, right? Well that prompted me to get a carry permit, and the rest is history. If your worried about a malfunction, carry a back-up.

Don't allow them to get close. It was 11:30 pm, I was getting gas and this filthy individual started walking up to me. I positioned myself so as to keep my truck between us. At first he said that the wanted directions. He had no car. I told him that I wasn't from around here and couldn't assist with any directions. Then he said that it was his birthday and wanted a couple of bucks for a beer. He started walking around my truck. I went into a ready stance and yelled STOP! DO NOT COME ANY CLOSER! His eyes got as big as diner plates and he tucked tale and hurried away. Don't allow them to get close.

If the guy was honest with me and just pan handling. I might have given him the two bucks. Not from a wallet, from a pocket. Place it on the gas pump or hood of the truck and walk a few steps away as he retrieves the money. Don't allow them to get close. But when stories change with in a few seconds, that's a warning sign to have your guard up. Remember individuals with no self respect can be trouble.

I wasn't always from the big city, I was reared in Northern Kentucky. I migrated to Ohio following the buck, and I don't mean deer. You can't make this kind of money down home. I thought the mean streets of Covington Kentucky was tough, I took Kung-Fu from 9 to 15 yrs old; then I joinned the boxing team. I only weigh 130 lbs., and fought all my life. I don't take crap, I can handle my own, but there is always someone tougher! My size is why I learned to take'em out quick; I can't afford for them to get me in a wrestling match. I had my first firearm at the age of five, .22 cal Marlin, tought myself how to handle a gun, and my brother's tought me how to be good with a gun! My Grandpa tought me how to be good with a rope and knife. I still wear Dingoe's and fix my own cars/trucks. I'm as country as they come, and I'm not worried about where I live, just how I live. Now I'm forty and I can't do all I once did, but I live good; guys! I can see a differnt show every night, I can see my neighborhood on the news evrynight, wait-a-minute, that ain't right! Yes, I've thought about moving, but it would still be in Ohio and close to work. I'm not complaining, guys, I just admit that I'm getting older, and that I need to be more at the top of my game now; more than ever... We all get alittle older every day..........

Very true Lieutenant! Aging is inevitable. I'm 33 now, and am finding I can't do some of the things I did just a couple years ago. It's frustrating.

Well I found my new activity! Paintballing. Don't laugh, if you've never been shot with one, you'll never know, but it's not a game for the weak. Regulator valves wide open, no rules, you shoot'em 'till they submit! Diving, running and jumping in thick foilage. The best safest war games you can imagine! It's fun, cheap, and hurts like hell! I played again yesterday, eight on eight, they were defenders the first round, they fell back 'til there was no where else to go. I fired a thousand rounds and went thru one cylinder of air. Second round, we were the defenders. They never broke our defenses, and found theirselves in cross fires from the text books. My abs hurt, my legs hurt, and I'm still feeling the fun. Not karate, but exercise to the extreme.

I have heard that from many a friend, but I'm not sure I want to go through the initiation of being the newbie.

I applaud you Fred! Keep up the hard work. I think your motivation and work are actually melting some of my fat! Seriously though, I'm beginning to get the itch to start working out again. Keep us posted and motivated.

Endorance has always been easy for me, I'm not a quiter at anything, which explains why I can't quit smoking or drinking. (Smile) I used to run ten miles a day. I used to work out for six hours a day. Now I run through a mile of woods, trying not to get ambushed... Stay active and stay heathy, thank Fred, You're on top of the game...
