Depends on the firearm.

Typically, disassemble and use break-free or gun scrubber spray to remove residue within the tube and gas entry port. If it's real bad an over night soak in solvent. Either way finish up the cleaning with several blasts of compressed air.

YOU NEED TO GO TO THE DRUG STORE AND BUY A BARBER BRUSH ,THE KIND FOR SHAVIN CREAM . IT IS A REAL ASSET . ( FOR ALL GUNS )TOOTH BRUSH , BREAK FREE , AND A PIECE OF COAT HANGER 8 INCHES LONG . FLATTEN ONE END OF THE WIRE WITH A HAMMER , IT MAKES A GREAT SCRAPE TOOL FOR INSIDE THE BOLT CARRIER , AND CHAMBER . PIPE CLEANERS FOR THE GAS TUBE WITH SOLVENT . DONT FORGET THE EJECTION PORT ON THE BOLT , PUSH OUT THAT LITTLE PIN FOR ACESS TO THE INSIDE OF THE BOLT Q-TIPS WILL BE HANDY HERE , AS WELL AS IN THE GASS PORT ON THE BOLT CARRIER .

From a previous post.

If the rifle bolt is not cycling, make sure the gas port opening under the front sight, inside the barrel is not plugged. The problem is either something is binding or the gas system is leaking or plugged. Spray solvent down the gas tube. If its not running out of the barrel, its clogged. Push long pipe cleaners all the way back and forth until it comes out clean. The spray solvent in the tube again until it runs out of the gas port in the barrel. The gas tubes are supposed to be self cleaning and seldom plug up unless perhaps you are using light loads that produce a lot of carbon. It is important to know your gas system and where the possible leakage points are: near the front sight, at the carrier key, at the gas rings, and where the bolt extends through the carrier by the firing pin.
