The advance model of IMI Tavor TAR-21 which is called IMI Tavor 2 has been selected as the future assault rifle of the Israel Defense Forces and within the next few years will become the standard infantry weapon. The IMI Tavor TAR-21 utilizes a bullpup design. It is worth mention here to provide additional information on this type (bullpup) mechanism. It (Bullpup) is a firearm design in which the mechanism and magazine are located behind the trigger. This eventually increases the barrel length relative to the overall weapon length, allowing shorter weapons for the same barrel length. It reduces weight and helps in easy handling during movement from one place to another. Such rifles are configured with a layout that has their bolt carrier group placed behind the pistol grip. It allows shortening of the overall length but does not reduce the barrel length.

For IMI Tavor it is said that it provides carbine length, but sacrifices on rifle accuracy. This assault rifle has been provided with ejection ports on both sides of the rifle so that it can easily be configured for left and right handed shooters. The process requires partial reassembling resulting in some time lost. The IMI Tavor TAR-21 design has been developed on advance human engineering and composite materials to produce a comfortable and reliable assault rifle. The IMI Tavor is a waterproof firearm and includes an advanced red dot reflect sight and can be mounted with various scopes, night vision system and electronic devices.

It accepts standard 5.56 mm NATO magazines and can be mounted with the M203 40 mm grenade launcher. Alike other assault rifles, the IMI Tavor also comes in different variations and includes standard, micro which is extremely short, commando, and designated marksman.
